Thoughts on the iPhone

In response to Amber’s comments about the iPhone, I thought it necessary to make some of my own.  I, too, used to think that the iPhone was over-the-top and unnecessary.  I do agree that children do not need one, and that until they are going off on their own to places, they don’t need any sort of cell phone, cause who are they going to be calling?  However, since I had a baby last May, I have discovered that I am forced to spend much less time away from my computer.  Before, I worked 8 hours a day and spent all that time glued to a computer, where I could freely check my email, look things up if I needed, etc.  I had established myself as someone who could be contacted most quickly by email, and I liked the ease of email vs. talking to people on the phone.  Now that I get maybe an hour sporadically throughout the day to check my email or look up things that I may have questions about, or even do schoolwork (and I do not have a laptop that I can drag with me from room to room), I felt the need for something that would make my life a bit easier.  My husband is someone who is fairly up-to-date with technology, though he did wait until the second version of the iPhone came out, (because that is just a good practice; the first version of anything is bound to have problems), so I played around with his for a bit, and I found I loved it.  I was due for an upgrade for my phone anyhow, so I convinced him to get me an iPhone.  It has made things much easier for me.  I am now able to communicate through email with people again, without stressing about leaving the baby alone for too long if my email becomes involved, or requires a long response.  Also, I have discovered that I like some of the apps that come with it, like the one where I can input all of the books I have already read, the ones on my “to-read” list and whether I own them or not, and I can get rid of the giant list I carry around with me in my purse.  There are also apps for things like looking up recipes and keeping track of your grocery list, on top of all the apps that do random, other things.  I can access the internet quickly without the drama of plugging in a computer (if I had a laptop), and it has a GPS with Google search, so if I need to know where the closest whatever is, I can find it in a matter of seconds.  On top of all that, it still is my iPod, holding all my music, so it cuts down on the number of actual items that I had been carrying in my purse. I never thought I would be one to sing the praises of the iPhone, but experiencing it has totally changed my mind as to its usefulness.

I’m trying to convince Jonathan that I need an IPhone…I think it’s going to take over the world….hahaha (imagine that in a big movie laugh!) I wanted a Kindle for Christmas, but Oprah put it on her favorite things list and so there was a three month wait, but now I found there is an app to read books on your phone. So why have two electronic devices when one can do everything! My contract isn’t up until December so I have some time to wait….I’m sure by then there will be something new and way cool for the IPhone.
